WAVE, Grafton Road
Partners: Worn Gundidj Nursery, STARS Foundation, First Nations mentors and Tutt Environmental Services.
GreenPrint Projects delivered its first school-based project at WAVE, working with twelve Year 9–10 students to trial the Living Classroom model and explore hands-on environmental learning as a pathway to student engagement.
Students transformed four existing garden beds into productive, biodiverse learning spaces, participating in landscape design, construction, planting and habitat creation.
Learning Through Doing
The WAVE project demonstrated the value of practical, project based environmental learning for students who may be disengaged from traditional classroom settings.
Students applied literacy, numeracy, problem solving, teamwork and design skills to real world tasks, seeing their ideas develop into a permanent feature within their school environment.
The project demonstrated that when students are provided with alternative learning environments and authentic responsibilities, their confidence, participation and interest in education can increase significantly.
Working alongside Indigenous mentors and community partners also strengthened students' connection to Country and supported meaningful cultural learning.
